Brazilian license plates originally were issued locally, and designs varied widely.  By 1941, a national standard emerged in terms of colors and numbering format, although the size and other appearance of plates could vary.  Most plates displayed on a city name with the abbreviation of the state.  In 1990, Brazil implemented a more standardized format with consistent sizes.
